A new residence situated on on the banks of the Red River in East Kildonan, architecturally designed by Monteyne Architecture Works Inc. Features of the new home include:
• New house built on site of existing house to avoid damage to trees. • Pile foundation based on geotechnical engineer’s report • Riprap and bank regrading were done to achieve riverbank stabilization prior to construction of the house • Durable standing seam metal roof • Low maintenance and durable cement board exterior cladding system • Fibreglass windows and high insulation levels • 7 kw grid-tie-in photovoltaic electricity generation system
Design / Construction Factors
The owners requested a house for a family of four with room to grow that would take advantage of their excellent river property. Siting of the house is carefully positioned amongst mature trees, to capture views of the Red River, and natural light. Replacing an existing house with foundation issues too bad to save, the new house is organized around a south facing atrium. The design is a modern take on the “Arts and Crafts” house, rendered in contemporary, low maintenance materials. Reflecting the owners’ commitment to reducing their energy footprint, a photovoltaic system is mounted on the roof.
Project Delivery
The project was delivered with a fixed fee arrangement for the stipulated scope of work. Additional work was added along the way, and completed for an additional fixed fee. This unique home was completed in 14 months, including some weeks' progress lost to bitter winter weather.
